{ Featured on FloForm Countertops blog, May 9, 2017 }

Hello everyone! We are so happy to be FLOFORM Countertops Guest Blogger today on “Countertops 101”. James River Kitchens has been working with FLOFORM for many years in Victoria, BC and has come to think of them as family.
Like FLOFORM, we love to share our design tips and tricks with you all. Today we want to share some simple tips for celebrating Mom this Mothers Day! A few easy, inexpensive and thoughtful DIY surprises for Mom that you can do right from your own kitchen!
So grab a cup of coffee and lets get started!
Did you know Mothers Day is the busiest day of the entire year for restaurants? We stress about where to take her, how long the wait will be, how much the bill will come out to and all the while she is just happy to be surrounded by the people she loves.
So, this year why not stay in and treat her to an entire day of pampering, from home! Create a spectacular spread of decadent food, treats, drinks and gifts… DIY style. A sure fire way to every Mother’s heart and the best part is, she doesn’t have anything to do with making it!

Fresh Coffee | Homemade Muffins | Fresh Fruit | Fresh Flowers | Mimosa
TIP: Always clean up your mess!

Fill champagne flute 1/2 full with chilled sparkling wine. Top with freshly squeezed orange juice and 1 tbls of Grand Marnier or Triple Sec.
TIP: Create a bar cart for her to make her own cocktail and always keep the ice fresh!

How much fun would it be for Mom to have flowers in every room! The bathroom, beside her bed, in the kitchen, the living room, floating in her bubble bath… Go outside and pick some wild flowers. Depending on where you live, there are so many fresh, wild, beautiful local flowers out there in the Springtime.
TIP: Try adding some branches, twigs or herbs from the garden for that extra special touch.

If your local spa is too much for your wallet this year, create an at home spa with simple touches like candles, soft music, a decadent bar of soap and perhaps some homemade body wash or scrub for that extra little something.
TIP: Enhance her experience with flower pedals sprinkled throughout the bathtub. OR Throw her towel in the dryer before she gets out for a warm finish to her relaxing soak! If that doesn’t scream spa, I don’t know what does!
Coconut Oil Body Scrub Recipe:
¼ – ½ cup granulated sugar
½ cup coconut oil
1 tablespoon citrus fruit zest (grapefruit, lemon, or orange) OR ½ teaspoon of citrus essential oil (about 50 drops)

Creating a homemade meal from scratch can be super fun, but some of us don’t always have the energy or time to cook from home. Keep your Mother’s Day meal simple and easy with finger foods that you know she will love.
Choose 4 or 5 of her favorites and even prepare or buy them in advance for a more relaxing day for everyone. The freezer can be your best friend in times like this!
TIP: Fold the napkins like the pros do for a fancy restaurant feel.
OR Create little signs out of paper or cardstock for each dish, to add a personal touch.

Mothers Day is just one day in which we all say a huge thank you to Mom, for everything she does day in and day out. We hope these little tips help to pamper your Mom on this very special day, and every other day too!

KITCHEN Lighting 101

our kitchen is the space where you prepare, chop, slice, entertain, indulge and clean. You want to be able to set the stage for any condition and what is worse than not being able to see what your doing?!

Let us start off by saying if you think you have enough lighting… always add more.

With the basic facts we’ve set out below, going into a lighting store won’t be as daunting. Or better yet, work with a professional Kitchen Designer for all the help you need for a stress free reno!

All you need to know are a few lighting rules to get you through a successful design and brighten up your day!

Whether it be natural light pouring in through your windows, doors or skylights, ensure you are utilizing as much natural light in your kitchen and entire home as possible.

If you are planning a re-model, ensure the layout is surrounded by that main door or window in your kitchen and if at all possible, add in a skylight above your prep station. Another great way to add natural light, is tearing out a wall to add a sense of openness and in turn add more light from other rooms. Keep blinds, shades and curtains white or sheer to bring in light while keeping privacy.

We know this as under cabinet lighting or pendants hanging over and island. Although these can be very beautiful, there initial job is to light up your prep station so chopping and slicing becomes a less dangerous task.

Also, ensure there is enough lighting above your sink, for easier clean up when your guests have all gone home for the night., or maybe they'll love your kitchen so much, they'll offer to help!

Adding in dimmers to each type of lighting used, can create just the mood you are looking for.

You guessed it, ambient light can change the mood of your entire kitchen with a flick of a switch, or turn of a dimmer. Although ambient light can add enough light to see the entire room, it can create shadows over your task, if not planned correctly. Hence why under cabinet lighting is so important, assuming you want to keep all your fingers?

Adding in recessed pot lights is a great way to brighten up your kitchen while creating a sense of height. Another great way to add height is installing above cabinet lighting, if the cabinets don’t go all the way to the ceiling.

The kitchen has become the hub of the entertainment zone for many homeowners. Once dinner is ready and on the table, simply switch over to some less invasive ambient lights, to set the mood and create a more relaxed space to enjoy your evening. Think about how much more relaxed you are in a dim and calming environment. Ahh!

TIP:  Once your kitchen layout has been determined, create a lighting plan or RCP (Recessed Ceiling Plan) with your Kitchen Designer BEFORE the cabinets are installed. Your electrician will need to work with these plans for the proper layout and lighting to be fulfilled.

Yet another reason to always work with a professional…

So, what’s an MDF Cabinet Anyways?

We take pride in our products and source our cabinets from quality cabinet manufactures that also take great pride in the cabinets they create. We are committed to high quality and taking the time to do the job right, to create your dream kitchen and home. - James River Kitchens

James River Kitchens has rapidly become Victoria's Premier Supplier of kitchen products and we are very proud to supply Canadian cabinets from Saskatoon
s very own Superior Cabinets.

Superior Cabinets offers a number of wood, paint and hand-crafted artistic finishes like MDF. Elegant and durable, their finishes are formulated for use in the cabinetry and furniture industry.

But what are MDF Cabinets?

Medium-Density Fibreboard is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF material, used for painted doors in the Superior Cabinets Collection, Urban lines and Fusion Finishes. It is the perfect material for painted lacquer finishes and various artisan or hand-crafted finishes.

MDF is also great for environments with low humidity and dramatic seasonal changes (example: Cabins or Cottages), as cracking at door joints due to seasonal changes will not occur, unlike painted wood doors which move causing cracking at door joints.

The Superior Cabinets Fusion Line of finishes satisfies customers that are looking for a decorative artistic handcrafted finish, without the high cost and environmental inflexibility of painted wood cabinets.

Fusion Cabinets are one-piece doors made from durable, environmentally conscious materials, stained and handcrafted to be that essential focal point of your home.

This dynamic line was nominated for the 2013 SABEX Award for New Product and/or Service and was the winner of the 2013 Achievement In Business Excellence (ABEX) Award for Innovation.

The Fusions Line also recently won the 2017 Best of KBIS Peoples Choice Award for best new product. Just a few reasons why we supply this wonderful product so much.

“The kitchen is the heart of the home. For many, it is the central hub where meals are created, guests are entertained, stories are shared, and loved ones stay connected. No matter where your day takes you, your kitchen will always be waiting for you when you get home.”
Whether your taste runs to the simple or the stately, the richness of dark wood or the cheer of a sunny yellow, the perfect style for your kitchen is out there. There are so many things to think about when choosing your cabinets. Hand-sanded and hand-rubbed stains, soft-close doors, full extension drawers, extensive use of sustainable hardwoods, door style, color, material and more.

Our suppliers range from local custom craftsmen to larger producers. All have been vetted based on their commitment to quality and taking the time to do the job right – using old world artistry to create your dream kitchen and home.

Our kitchen cabinet selection ranges from
EUROPEAN, FACE FRAME & INSET styles. But what is the difference between these you ask?

EUROPEAN style are frameless cabinets that are crafted with the finest quality materials and workmanship. This type is all about contemporary elegance, with a distinctive smooth look and minimal shadow lines.
European cabinets feature the crisp and clean look of simple, smooth, unbroken surfaces. Cabinets and drawers fit almost flush creating a contemporary design particularly when paired with modern touches like stainless steel or glass.
Clean & Contemporary.

FACE FRAME cabinets provide just enough reveal to emphasize the stately lines of this ageless look, that draws from the strength and beauty of tradition.

Urban to Country. Craftsman Cabinetry.

offers old school furniture-style cabinetry that features inset doors that close flush within the cabinet frame.
The result is a classic, timeless “furniture” look.
⟵Refined. Elegant. Traditional Cabinetry.

Our partners at
DeWils Custom Cabinetry are a family owned and operated facility with years of experience and cabinets that are out of this world. Our staff are trained in this beautiful product and even experienced a live tour of this breathtaking 200,000 square foot facility, to see first hand where all the magic happens. Let us help to incorporate some of that magic into your home!

One thing that every kitchen has in common is a corner, or corners. Scary, hard to reach, items get lost, dark and dusty, flimsy shelves, creaky metal, hard on your back corners!

How can this be a good idea when designing a kitchen! With so many options for the Lazy Susan these days, here are our 4 favourites, for Lazy Susan solutions that we know your going to like…

1.  The Push Through:

From the outside this looks like a regular lazy susan, but this isn’t called the Push Through for nothing. With one quick push of your hand, the doors go inside the cabinet and rotate with the shelves, then close the doors automatically on its own. The metal pole and shelves make this a solid and sturdy solution for larger pots, pans and appliances.

Perhaps you have pets or little hands grabbing at everything and need a quick bag of flower or can of soup from your corner cabinet. This is not only modern in looks, but functionality as well.

2.  Corner Recycling Centre:

With the ongoing need to reduce, reuse and recycle, we have an option to ensure that pesky corner is being utilized to its full potential. Why not add your recycling or garbage centre here? This is a conventional, easy and tidy way to keep organized at home. If a pantry or closet is not an option, move your bins to the corner and create more space somewhere else for cans and appliances.

3.  CORNER Pull Out Drawers:

What could be more convenient, easy and accessible than corner drawers! When closed they simply blend in with the base cabinets. You can have one large pull out, or four, whatever suits your needs.

With a full extension drawer, you can utilize the entire drawer without the hassle or rummaging, plus it looks really unique when opened!

4.  Le Mans Square Corner Cabinet Pull-Out:

This final option not only has a fancy name, but a fancy appearance and fantastic functionality.

With it’s sturdy metal base and kidney bean shape, the Le Mans corner pull out does just that, it pulls right out into your kitchen! No more reaching inside the cabinet. Simply pull it out, grab your small appliance, pot or pan and push it right back in. It’s literally that simple. Ideal for a “blind corner” with one door on one side.

The Lazy Susan is still a very important part of your kitchen design and needs a bit of thought when designer your new or renovated space. Take note of what you would like to be stored in there and visit a kitchen showroom to get the best guidance and knowledge first hand with that kitchen corner! Make sure to accessorize your kitchen cabinets and drawers in the planning stages and improve convenience in your day-to-day kitchen.

2017… it seems like the more out of the ordinary things are these days, the better. But that doesn’t mean it is something that will stand the test of time in the design world.

We all have different opinions about what we think looks good or is in style or has trending staying power. This year is no different for some pretty fun and innovative trends to spice things up in the kitchen department. As Kitchen Designers ourselves, we have picked out a few of our favorites.
And it just so happens, that we had ALL of these in our showroom first!

If ample storage is taking up the space for upper cabinets, (in a pantry or drawers perhaps), then simply install some shelves and paint them to match your existing cabinetry.
Many people think they must spend all this extra money to buy fancy bowls and vases to put on this new open shelfing concept. WRONG. This extra storage can be used for small appliances, regularly used drinking glasses, your favorite art pieces, or that old piece of china that doesn’t match anything else. Adding in graphic wall paper, tiles or painted glass is another way to make your shelves pop.

Perhaps you need some more greenery in your kitchen and want to grow some herbs. Go to a used home store or garage sale and have fun with eclectic pieces around your house! Open shelving is a modern and fresh look for any kitchen and has enough design power to last for years.

With so many options for door styles, it can be hard to choose just one type of cabinet. From wood, MDF, thermofoil, glass, painted, stained, light, dark, flat panel to shaker style, the list goes on an on… The good news is you don’t have to choose just one!

Playing around with color, texture and door style is a fun way to design a kitchen and keep everyone in the household happy. Many do light cabinets on the uppers and darker for the base, to enhance the height of the room, but switching that around works too. Even having an island a completely different style is a great way to give your space dimension and depth.

Appliances have been the hit of the party for many years already. So when a standout stove is center stage in a kitchen, it demands a range hood with equal star power. This not only adds an immense pop of design flare, but you can also add storage for spices and small dishes if room allows.

Hardware can be something to upgrade for under $100!  What a better way to change your kitchen design, than adding in some gold accessories, that are easy to install and inexpensive.

Metals in general have made a huge comeback into our home designs. Play around with different shades of gold, such as rose gold or brushed or metallic. This adds warmth, class and just that touch of modern you are looking for.
We like to think that with a combined 30 years of experience we kind of know a think or two about what a kitchen needs for success and what won’t last past the season. But knowing before someone even walks in the door, that just because we like it, some people won’t.

So our job is to simply point out what is currently trending, ask you as many questions about your design taste as we can to help, and let you do the rest.

Be inspired by trends, not persuaded.
